As part of the Sustrans Active Schools Travel programme we are holding a DITCH THE DARK DAY on FRIDAY 18 JANUARY 2019.
This is a day where we are encouraging our pupils to walk, scoot or cycle to school, along with wearing their brightest clothing. They may also decorate any bikes and scooters in a safe manner.
We will hold an assembly to discuss the importance of being bright and seen on darker days and prizes will be awarded to some pupils who make a special effort.
Parents are encouraged to actively travel with their children on the morning of Ditch the Dark Day.
** If you are unable to walk, scoot or cycle the whole journey from home, please consider a ‘Park n Stride’ option where you are encouraged to drive part of the journey to school, find a safe and suitable place to park up, meet friends and walk the final part of the journey (7-10 mins) – you may find this more relaxing than sitting in traffic. Our suggestions would be to park either close to the Nisa Service Station or close to the Post House Café and Trader D.**
This will be a fun day whilst highlighting the importance of being seen while travelling to school. We would ask for a small donation of £1 per pupil, which will be used by our School ‘Eco’ Council for ECO SCHOOL activities in the future.

Dave Wiggins from Sustrans recently spent a morning with our Primary 5 and 6 pupils experimenting High Vis clothing. The pupils were given tasks to investigate and come up with a conclusion. Some of these tasks included:
Which person stands out the best in normal daylight?
Which person stands out the best in the dark?
Which person stands out the best in the dark and with a light shining on them?
So which things are best to wear or have if you are cycling, scooting or walking and want to stand out and be visible?
Take a look through the gallery to see how they got on:

Primary 5 Mrs Peacocke’s class were very privileged to be chosen to take part in Sustrans’ Message in a Bottle. The bottle is being passed around the six different areas Sustrans work in in Northern Ireland and Waringstown Primary School was the fourth area to complete it. The bottle had a message which asked us to complete a Chapter about Dave Wiggin’s folding bike going on an adventure to find one of the six Golden Chains. The class worked together with Mrs Peacocke to create a story including clues that led Buzz and his sidekick Stanley Stabilisers on an adventure around the area of Waringstown. The children really enjoyed this activity and the parents even got involved too after discussions at home about what we were doing. A big thank you to Dave for choosing Waringstown to take part in this and the children and parents for all their input into the story. When the six areas have completed the adventure the whole story will be bound into a book and a copy will be presented to the school. Primary 5 are very excited to hear how the quest to find the six Golden Chains will end.

On Monday THE BIG PEDAL begins, and runs through to Friday 04 May. The Big Pedal is the UK’s largest inter-school cycling and scooting challenge that inspires pupils, staff and parents to choose two wheels for their journey to school.
On each day two of our senior pupils will go around each class and record how many cycled and scooted to school. These results will be uploaded to www.bigpedal.org.uk. Basically, we compete with other registered schools to see who can record the greatest number of pupils, staff and parents cycling or scooting to school. Our best five days will determine our final position in the challenge. We’ll be competing against other schools right across the UK, and if we clock up the most bike and scooter journeys we’ll win!
For more information about the event go to www.bigpedal.org.uk

As part of the Sustrans Active Schools Travel programme we had a 'Ditch The Dark Day' on Friday 26 January 2018.
Many of our pupils walked, scooted or cycled to school. They also wore bright and colourful clothing. Accessories were bright and creative, even bicycles and scooters were reflecting the theme!
A whole school assembly was led by Mr Dave Wiggins, he reiterated the importance of being bright and seen during the winter. Mr Wiggins also carried out a 'Bike Check' on many bicycles brought into school this morning, it was a very busy day as you will see by browsing through our photo gallery:

Ditch the Dark Day was supposed to be tomorrow, Friday 19 January. Due to the weather warning that has been put in place, we are postponing it until next Friday, the 26th January.
This is a day were we are encouraging our pupils to walk, scoot or cycle to school. The previous note had said that children may ‘accessorize their uniforms in a bright and creative way.’ To make it easier, we have changed this to a full non-uniform day (wear bright clothing) and decorate any bikes and scooters in a bright, safe manner.
We will hold an assembly to discuss the importance of being bright and seen on darker days and prizes will be awarded to some pupils who make a special effort.
Parents are encouraged to actively travel with their children on the morning of Ditch the Dark Day.
This will be a fun day whilst highlighting the importance of being seen while travelling to school. We would ask for a small donation of £1 per pupil, which will be used by our School ‘Eco’ Council for ECO SCHOOL activities in the future.

Over the past two weeks P4 have been completing a Writing Project which aims to promote sustainable travel and walking to school. They started this by exploring what persuasive language is, and gathered information and the pros and cons of saying that everyone should walk to school. P4 then spent time planning, looking at advertisement posters and the language used within them. Today, P4 got to create their own 'WALK TO SCHOOL' posters using illustrations and persuasive language. Some of these posters will be placed around school, which links in well with our SUSTRANS work and ECO SCHOOLS work.
Well done P4
Click 'READ MORE' to see some of the work in progress...and be sure to look out for some of the finished posters on the walls around the school

Today Dave Wiggins, the Active Travel Officer for our area, came into school to present some of our P6 children with their National Standard Cycling certificates and also present our school with our SUSTRANS BRONZE AWARD for all the work we've done this year to promote sustainable travel. We want to thank all of our staff, parents and pupils for taking part in the various initiatives and challenges throughout this year.
The School ECO Council were delighted to be able to present Dave Wiggins with a small gift to go towards a charity that he is raising money for...by cycling 100 miles on an old road bike! This is just a little acknowledgment to all the work Dave has done with us.
