This week in Forest School P4 were given the challenge to make shelters. In groups they had to build shelters using only two sheets of tarpaulin, some clothes pegs and a few bamboo sticks. They were also allowed to use whatever they could find around them, including trees, branches and the fence.
The children all worked very well in their groups and it was interesting to hear of the different problems each group encountered when designing their shelter.

As our P4s have been learning about compass points and bearings in the classroom, today in Forest School they had to write down the directions to find specific items. Using clip boards, the children worked in groups to create the easiest route to a specific item. After a short time, the groups switched clip boards and had to follow the bearings that different group had written out, to make sure they were correct.
The children enjoyed taking their learning outside.

Today saw the start of Forest School for our Primary 4 pupils. We went outside to our Forest School 'classroom' and the children, in groups, created a picture of a polar animal. The children loved working with their hands and the freedom that the outdoors gave us.

Today in Forest School P4 were developing their learning on fractions, with the focus being on equivalent fractions. In pairs and groups, the children filled split hoops into different fractions and filled these with different materials. Some groups investigated filling two sixths of a hoop with different items and then moving the bamboo sticks to see that two sixths were the exact same size as one third.

This week at Forest School both classes joined together to do their RE lessons. We were looking at some major 'biblical' events and the children, in their groups, had to create a picture representing the event their group had chosen. The group work was fantastic, as was the weather!
Have a look through the pictures and see if you can figure out the bible scenes chosen.

As Primary 4 have been learning about area, today in Forest Schools we challenged our pupils to find the area of leaves. They began by using non-standard units (such as daisies, sticks, pine cones and plant petals). Some children worked out the area of larger items using other non-standard units.
During our evaluation we talked about the need for standard units, such as squares, which we will be using in class to find the area of different shapes.

On Monday our Primary 4 pupils went outside to continue their current maths topic of symmetry. Some children worked in groups, some in pairs and others by themselves, to create a symmetrical picture on the ground of whatever they wanted. Afterwards, the children had opportunities within the classroom to look at all the photogtraphs and discuss just how symmetrical they were.
This was a great opportunity to extend our Primary 4 pupils' knowledge of symmetry.

Today in Forest School our P4 children put on their wellington boots and coats and went on a perimeter walk. The children walked over all sorts of ground and helped to pick up litter that they came across. After the walk, the children got into groups and had to try and create a birds eye view map of our school grounds.
