Primary 4 had a fantastic day today as they travelled to the Clandeboye Estate today to visit 'Robin Wood!' When we arrived we had our break, and then split into two groups. One group went to Robin Wood to enjoy some free play and make smores around the camp fire. The other group completed a range of games and activities in the meadow. The groups switched over before we all enjoyed our picnic in Robin Wood.
What a womderful way to finish off our Forest School programme.

This week P4G were given to freedom to work on anything they wanted during Forest School. They were allowed to work alone or in groups, and had to be willing to share why those choose what they did during our evaluation. The purpose of this was to allow the children to explore their thinking skills and personal capabilities.
Some children wanted to build dens, so had to problem solve as to how to make a shelter with limited materials.
Other children wanted to create pictures and used the materials they found around them to help with this.

As Primary 4 have been learning about area, today in Forest Schools we challenged our pupils to find the area of leaves. They began by using non-standard units (such as daisies, sticks, pine cones and plant petals). After a discussion, the children realised there was a need to use standard units, so they were all given cubes.
We also discussed how best to find the area of a large square which had been set out. The children worked together with some wool to create their own squares inside the large square and we counted them together.

Today in Forest School P4G were measuring the distance between trees. The initally had to measure using items on the ground, but then they were able to use bamboo sticks, trundle wheels, metre sticks and measuring tapes. This Forest School lesson was a great way to bring numeracy outside.

Today in Forest School P4G were developing their learning on fractions, with the focus being on equivalent fractions. In pairs and groups, the children filled two sixths of a hoop with different items they found around them. Then, the children moved their bamboo sticks to see that two sixths were the exact same size as one third.

This week in Forest School the Primary 4 children had to work in groups to create a map of where they hid a packet of eggs. After a bit of time of creating the maps and hiding the 'treasure,' the groups moved around and used the maps to find the eggs.

This week in Forest School the two P4 classes did separate things, both relating to our current WAU topic. Due to studying both Anderson Shelters and Morrison Shelters in class, P4G were tasked with making a 'Forest School Shelter,' using very few materials. The children worked brilliantly in ther groups to come up with their creations. P4McA completed a Perimeter Walk in order to make a bird's eye view of the school.
In both of these activities the children had time to investigate, discuss and create, which is a great way to develop their thinking skills and personal capabilities.

P4G had a special Forest School lesson today as they displayed what we do to a group of Stranmillis PGCE Students accompanied by Mrs McClelland. As P4 have been looking at maps in both their 'Life in the Recent Past' and 'Polar Region' topics, it got us talking about birds eye and aerial views. The children, after completing a perimeter walk of the school, had to design an aerial view of the school grounds using only the materials around them.
Each group had a chance to talk about what they made and were questioned by their classmates, encouraging using cross curricular skills and many of the thinking skills and personal capabilities as outlined in the NI Curriculum.
The children also spoke with the visiting students and were great ambassadors for Waringstown Primary School. We're very proud of how well they listened and behaved.
