Term Two/Three    Friday     3.00 – 3.55 pm

The Primary 6 / 7 Rugby Club runs each Friday from late February right into the summer term depending on progression in a number of tournaments. The Rugby Club provides boys and girls the opportunity to play and enjoy the game of rugby. Each year the club offers both Tag and Mini Rugby.

Tag Rugby is a minimal contact team game in which each player wears shorts with velcro patches with two tags attached to them. The mode of play is similar to Touch Rugby with attacking players attempting to dodge, evade and pass a rugby ball while defenders attempt to prevent them scoring by "tagging" - pulling a velcro attached tag from the ball carrier. It encourages children to understand the 'basics' of rugby with both girls and boys being able to engage in the sport.

Mini Rugby is a more involving contact game in which 9 players play a simpler version of the regular game. There are four backs, and five forwards. There is no pushing in a mini rugby scrum, which is made up of - two props, a hooker and a second row of two locks. Mini and Tag rugby have recently become non-competitive, aiming to foster the passion and enjoyment of rugby.

In the recent past however, Waringstown Primary school were no strangers to success in the sport. The school has regularly achieved highly in many competitions both local and national.  The school has a great record of success in the local Tag Blitz at Lurgan Rugby club winning it 2007,2009 and 2010.  This allowed the boys and girls to play in the national finals which have been held in Omagh, Portadown and Lisburn. The National finals on each occasion have been a celebration of rugby and have had an emphasis on fun, skill and fair-play. As such the national finals have been run as non-competitive round robin tournaments, with no outright winners. The school has however won awards for both fair-play and skill in 2010.

Waringstown Primary School has been very successful in Mini Rugby as well, qualifying as runners up in the local tournament in Banbridge. This gave the team the opportunity to play at 'Fortress' Ravenhill the home of Ulster Rugby in 2008.  The boys excelled in this competition being narrowly defeated in the final to finish runners up in the overall competition.

The Rugby Club aims to promote passion and enthusiasm for the sport of rugby and to give all its members the opportunity to have fun whilst learning new skills.
