The girls from Waringstown Primary School certainly know where the net is when it comes to football, as last Thursday at the Cookstown arena they defeated teams from all over the province to become the Girls’ Primary School Champions for Northern Ireland.

This is the first time that any girls’ team from the local area has won the coveted trophy.

The girls, all from Primary 7, had gone into the National Finals buoyed up by the fact that they remained unbeaten in all fixtures this year.

The year got underway in early February when the girls won the ‘Active Communities Programme’ trophy, scoring 20 goals on the way, conceding none.

The second tournament, organised by NISFA proved a great success as well, with the girls winning all of their matches to qualify as Mid – Ulster champions – leading to automatic qualification for the National Finals.

Fourteen teems from all over Northern Ireland met up to decide the ultimate champions and the girls proved a handful for opposing teams from Belfast and further a field.

Having qualified as champions of their group, the girls entered the final phase to play much bigger schools from throughout the province.  However, the girls proved much too strong for all their rivals and having conceded only one goal in the whole tournament, lifted the trophy to become, Girls’ Primary School Football Champions for the first time in the School’s history!

Mr T. Brown (coach) ably assisted by Mrs K. Johns heaped praise on the girls for their attitude throughout the year, especially on the pitch.  “We are all so proud of the girls and their achievement. I told the girls that they could win it and they did just that,” said Mr Brown.

Mr G.G. Kennedy (Principal) highlighted the fact that this was the first time the school had ever won the Northern Ireland Girls’ title and praised all concerned on such a marvellous accolade for the school.
